Position: A steel producer wanted to integrate a weighing system on their portable molten metal rail cars; used for transporting molten metal to and from multiple locations within their plant. The weighing system needed to be self-powered, with remote indication and control that allowed operators to remain at safe distances from the molten metal.

Solution
Four compression load cells were placed under the crucible platform on each rail car. Their outputs were summed together using the MSI-9002 Summing Box and wired to an MSI-9000 CellScale that was powered by a 12V rechargeable battery. The weighment information was transmitted from the CellScale to an MSI- 9850 RF Digital Indicator mounted in the control room and to MSI-9750A Handheld RF Digital Indicators that was used by operators.
Features and Benefits The robust industrial weighing and packaging of CellScale family products is ideally suited to provide outstanding performance in the demanding Metals Industry applications. The 12-volt SLA battery powered CellScale provided approximately 15 hours of continuous use between charges. The CellScale Wireless Network provided real time weighment information to both the control room and operators. An added bonus was the Inter-Network Radio Messaging (standard feature on both the MSI-9850 and MSI-9750A) that enabled special instructions to be transmitted and received from the control room and operators.
