This article's content is about the weighbridges and load cells manufactured by Axle Weighing Technology.

The professional Commercial driver knows the government department who have weighbridges called weigh stations located on the side of main roads as,
"WEIGHTWATCHERS".

Weighbridges, Load cells for all your weighing requirements. "We have the Technology"

They use Portable weighbridges, Load Cells, Portable Weight pads followed by even more high tech equipment for all their axle weighing.

When you are driving down the highway with your cargo and get flagged down by the police for a weight check, what is the technology behind the weighbridge equipment. Quite a variety can be used.
Below are some details from perhaps the number one in the UK and a world leader in this technology. The vehicle doesn even need to stop to be weighed, all high tech stuff.
It's a sensible policy to keep an eye on the load of your vehicle/vehicles. Axle Weighing Technology can achieve this goal for you.

Weighbridges for HGV or LGV are there to catch the overloaded vehicle, don wait (or weight) for HMG to tell you your axle weight, fit your own mobile travelling weigh bridge on your vehicle, feel the weight of worry removed from your concerns, it has to be a load off your mind.

This weighbridge is for larger operations and is just one of many options in size and shape and disposition.

This is a UK Specialist Company in axle weighing. They manufacture static and dynamic axle weighbridges, on-board weighing systems and portable and semi-permanent equipment.

They have supplied weighbridges and equipment to many major fleet operators around the world and seem to be the principal maintenance contractor to the UK Vehicle Inspectorate. Their unique experience means that they can offer correct solutions, to any axle weighing application and provide service and upgrades for all manufacturers.

The weighbridges offer weight solutions for all vehicle types, refuse collectors, tippers, box vans, just about anything on the road. Whether you need a high accuracy load cell system or a low cost spring deflection indicator, advanced equipment technology will have it in their range.

Weighbridge or wheel pads get you a result
These wheel pad types are for the operator who needs accurate measurement of small to large vehicles very economically.

Weight Technology Dynamic Axle Weighbridges

Some vehicles have compensating suspensions (tri-axle trailers, 4 axle rigids etc) which will transfer weight between themselves in response to the vehicle stopping and starting. The only means of accurately determining the load applied to each axle is to weigh the vehicle in motion at low speed on a dynamic axle weighbridge.

Dynamic weighbridges are widely used by the Department of Transport for axle weight enforcement throughout Britain and provide axle and gross weights for vehicles of all types. The vehicle is weighed in motion at a constant speed of up to 2.5mph, to avoid the weight transfers caused by stopping and starting. This necessitates perfectly flat concrete approaches either side of the weighing platform.

Typical users other than law enforcement include breweries and supermarket distributors who operate considerable numbers of articulated vehicles carrying a mixture of products and who want to get the load distribution correct.

Static Axle Weighbridge

Two axle vehicles have no compensating mechanism to transfer weight and can thus be weighed statically on an axle-by-axle basis. A Single Axle Static system can thus be used for these applications. Typical users include public utilities or secondary distribution companies operating vehicles up to 18 tonnes.

Where the prime concern is to monitor stock control possible being transported on bigger vehicles, larger platforms can be used to weigh groups of compensating axles together. For instance in agriculture, a farmer would be very interested in checking the weight of product leaving the farm but may be less concerned about legal axle weights. He could thus use what we term a Multi Axle weighbridge which has a platform big enough to weigh compensated bogies as a group.

A smaller platform for weighing pairs of axles is widely used by companies monitoring product arriving and leaving on 4 axle rigids. Typical users include local authorities and waste contractors.

Full size weighbridge

The only application that requires a full size weighbridge is one where an invoice is being raised using the weights produced as the basis for calculating payment. The vehicle is weighed in one go and a very accurate measure of gross and net weight can be obtained. Full sized weighbridges must be incapable of being affected by external influences and thus they are often restricted in terms of external devices to which they can be connected.

weighbridge of a dufferent type, talk to us for even more types
This weighbridge type can be adapted for small to medium operations.

Full size weighbridges are not capable of accurately measuring axle weights as they arrive at the axle weight by subtraction. For instance, if a vehicle weighs 32 tonnes and one axle is driven off the plate, the machine may show 26 tonnes and thus assumes the axle removed weighed 6 tonnes. Given the weight transference problems which are introduced by compensating suspensions, this method can never be accurate as the machine will always produce a final axle weight that ensures all the axles add up to the total.

Any trade system must use load cells and instrumentation that has been approved by National Weights and Measure Laboratory as fit for trade so that Trading Standards can test it and stamp it.

Dynamic weighing weighbridges have been approved by NWML recently but the accuracy of gross weighing will never be as good a for a full size weighbridge and generally it is thought that if cash is changing hands then the full sized bridge is the preferred option.

Portable weighpads

Portable weighpads are best used by operators of two axle rigid vehicles although they can be used in groups to weigh compensating axles together to avoid weight transference difficulties.

A certain amount of physical effort is required to use weighpads and the very best applications are those where a transport manager is responsible for a number of depots and wants to do spot checks. He can keep the weighpads in his car and if he suspects a vehicle to be overloaded, he can instantly weigh it.

weighbridge fixed type
This weighbridge type whilst small can weigh a complete vehicle which is much larger in size than the pad area..

On-board Weighing

Equipment is being fitted more and more to the vehicle to maximise payload, monitor stock control or ensure legality. Various types are offered from low cost systems which monitor the vehicle suspension to full load cell based trade approved units.

The systems that measure suspension deflection are not true weighing machines but are very effective at preventing overloading. They are not expensive and can be fitted to the vast majority of vehicles. Users include local authorities, utilities or any company whose vehicles load away from a central base.

Load cell systems are widely fitted to tipping vehicles and in addition to preventing gross overloads they provide a very accurate measure of payload. This can be essential for reducing the number of trips a vehicle has to make during a day. A recent innovation has meant that front and rear split can be calculated accurately thus preventing axle as well as gross overloading.

Load cells are being increasingly fitted to other vehicles where monitoring of payload is essential. County Council gritting vehicles for example may have to provide a printout to prove to District Councils that a certain amount of salt had been spread on a certain road.

Another recent innovation has seen the introduction of load cell based systems that can be approved for trade. This means that the vehicle can be a mobile weighbridge, issuing an invoice straight from the cab. Potential users of this system include animal feed suppliers, who may be splitting full loads between more than one customer

There are many variations on the basic themes described above and many optional extras can be added to a system to enhance its operation. Automatic vehicle lID, computer links, external displays and printers to name a few.

Axle Weighing Technology, On Board load cells

On-board axle load weight indicator to suit most types of vehicles from car-derived vans through two-axle rigids to multi-axle rigid and articulated vehicles.

On-board was designed to give accurate information, reliably, at a viable cost. It is accurate to 2.5% of full-scale reading, which is more than adequate to ensure efficient operation within the law. It is reliable, demonstrated by exhaustive trials in the harsh environment of the waste industry, both on- and off-road.

On-board axle load indicator makes economic sense too. It is inexpensive not only to buy but also to fit and maintain, whilst providing the essential information to maximise legal payloads every trip.

On-board cells can be fitted in the factory or on site given suitable garage facilities. Recalibration is recommended periodically, and can be carried out by the user using the calibration box. On-board indicates axle, bogie and gross loads on a neat digital display. Axle or gross overloads are automatically highlighted.

There is on-board weight indication to show front and rear axle or bogie weights as well as gross and net weights on a single line display. This is essential information to protect you from axle overloads.

The absence of manual controls make on-board simple to use. All overloads are automatically highlighted. The precision load cells are suitable for most types of vehicle including multi-axle rigids and articulated trailers.

Accurate to 50kg, it ensures maximum legal payload every trip, reliably and at a viable cost. All exposed components are environmentally sealed to ensure long life.

Inexpensive to buy, fit and maintain, these on-board cells can be fitted to new vehicles when the body is built, or retrofitted. Any recalibration is done on site by the user with the calibration box provided, keeping routine maintenance costs to a minimum.
